The origins of the benedictines in Catalunya |
The monk San Benedict, Father of Western monasticism, lived as a monk in Italy in the 6th century. His brethren soon spread all over Europe. In Catalonia the first monasteries for nuns were that of "St. Pere de les Puelles" of Barcelona, already existing in 945, and that of "St. Daniel" of Gerona in 1017. Our community has a particular history of its own, fairly unknown. |
The origin of our monastery of St Benedict |

THE MONASTERY OF STA. CLARA OF BARCELONA. At the side of St. Francis of Assis we find sister Clara (1209-1212). A niece of Sta. Clara, by the nameof Agnes, came to Barcelona to found the monastery of S. Antony and Sta. Clara(1232-1236). In those days the nuns of the order of Sta Clara were following the Rule of S. Benedict. In 1513,when the Rule of Sta Clara was approve, nuns of the monasteries of the order of Sta Clara had to choose between the two Rules, and our monastery preferred to continue following the Rule of St. Benedict, thus passing in to the Benedictine Order. After the destruction of the monastery, in 1713, Philip V gave parts of the Royal Palace to the nuns. After the civil war of 1936 to 1939, they lived provisionally in diverse places, before the union with the nuns who were in the Monastery of Sta Cecila at Montserrat was finalized. THE MONASTERY OF ST BENEDICT AT MATARÓ. The Monastery of St Benedict at Mataró was founded by nuns of St. Pedro's community of Barcelona, and of St. Daniel of Gerona (1881). Having lost the monastery in 1936,due to destructions during the war, the nuns went to establish themselves at the Monastery of Sta. Cecilia at Montserrat, property of the monks, received by will of the Abbot Antony Mª Marcet. And on May 13, 1952, exactly 50 years ago, BOTH COMMUNITIES JOINED TO FORM THE MONASTERY OF SANT BENET AT MONTSERRAT |
